Licorice Pizza Records Makes A Comeback Of Sorts

Everyone who feels slightly disappointed about the lack of references in Licorice Pizza by Paul Thomas Anderson to the Licorice Pizza Records store has a reason for getting excited. A new Studio City-based boutique store is expecting to reintroduce the musical vibes, with vintage clothing, vinyl records and collectibles that concern the film entitled Licorice Pizza and the good ol’ days.

The exclusive screenings of Licorice Pizza at Landmark theater locations will include the store. The screenings will feature a question-and-answer session with the editor of the film, Andy Jurgensen, and its director Anderson. Every screening will provide immersive elements, which will include pinball games for free, a lounge space with DJs working with retro jam music as well as specialty drinks and food with gestures of acknowledgement to Licorice Pizza. The food items will include a bar menu, Landmark’s licorice pairings with concessions’ pizza, and themed beverages.

As LA Weekly highlighted in its December 2021 cover story, Licorice Pizza is a sincere piece of nostalgia, which captures the carefree attitude of people and the complicated relationships in SoCal of the 1970’s era. Read the LA Weekly story to know the thoughts of Anderson about not mentioning or showing the shop in the film.

The pop-up Licorice Pizza Records will provide movie merchandise and retro things, which will include music pieces, in the Landmark theater lobby. However, the physical location of Licorice Pizza Records in LA’s Studio City is here to stay. It sells the most delectable music in town.

A music shop was the childhood dream of Licorice Pizza Records’ trademark owner Kerry Brown. However, Brown built it as the world shuts itself down in view of COVID-19 challenges. It was not great timing in this regard, but it was great with regard to partnerships with Anderson’s movie. The film has already received wide critical acclaim and even created Academy Awards buzz for Anderson. For your information, Anderson is most popular for his films entitled Inherent Vice and Boogie Nights. The two movies have flashbacks similar to Licorice Pizza of Anderson.

Licorice Pizza Records was a record store in Long Beach that gained popularity in 34 locations across SoCal. The Gen-Z and millennial audience might not know the above-mentioned fact.
