An Interview With Pop Art Painting Maker Gooey

The artistic vision of painter Gooey covers geographically grabby, brightly chromatic works, design, mural and merch. Gooey believes that art is likely to be anything and has to be everywhere. He aims to make objects and images exuding the sizzle and life of pop culture-based art having the more gestural and emotional abstraction style, even expressionism.

Miro, Motherwell, Rashid Johnson, Willem de Kooning, Kaws, and Roy Lichtenstein have all influenced Gooey’s work. His affection for beautiful and bright things has made him move from Mexico to Los Angeles in search of a growing set of viewers for his visual seductions. Here we’ve collected excerpts of an interview he did with LA Weekly.

When Does It Mean To Gooey To Be An Artist?

As for Gooey, being this person is all about creating. He says that the more amount of time one spends making something, the more they grow into an artist. The painter has always been attracted by visual art and crafting, and that caused him to realize that he loves to do it and be around it every day.

Objects, color, and trying out new ways and ideas of bringing a painting into a three-dimensional experience.

Did Gooey Attend Art School?

He never did so, so you could say that he is a self-taught artist. A young Gooey was keen on sports, art and skateboarding, but he considered those hobbies that would not materialize into a permanent job or earn him money. Therefore, he attended business school. Following his graduation, he realized that that was not his cup of tea. For that reason, he went down the self-taught road, learning through YouTube videos and internships.

What Would He Be Doing In The Event He Was No Artist?

Gooey says he perhaps would have been in music or sports. In his younger days, he played sports and designed his team jerseys. Therefore, his second career would have been associated with sports. Besides, he loves music, so he feels that a career in that field would have also been great.

Why Does He Live In Los Angeles And Work Here Instead Of Somewhere Else?

Gooey came to LA accidentally, and he chose to stay here since he feels that the city has a growing culture. Plenty of things happen with art, food, music, culture and sports in Los Angeles. So much so, it attracts much creativity, which makes him feel great to be surrounded by, from an energy standpoint. Gooey also feels that it is great to evolve with a metro city and its people who have always been here instead of appearing at the time of hype.

Gooey has been performing group shows over the last year, on the internet and a few socially distanced experiences. He is expecting to see a year of normalcy for a solo exhibit in LA. He wants people to convene and party.

Which Past Or Present Artist Would He Most Prefer To Display With?

Gooey finds it difficult to answer this as there are numerous great artists according to him. He loves the creations of Keith Haring, Roy Lichtenstein, and Francis Picabia. So, he feels it would be a privilege to do an exhibit with one of their works.

Which Form Of Music Does He Listen To When Working?

It is important to have music playing when he works. He may go for jazz, the band the National’s music, 1970’s music or 1990’s electronics for good energy, according to his mood at the time.
